First thing is first. Have any of you heard Vampire Weekend's version of the Fleetwood Mac song "be with you everywhere"? ...No? Well you should! I swear I could ooooooooowwwwaaahhhhhhh all the way back to the 80's during that song.
Im so pumped! Lots of new and exciting photo excursions are taking place this month. Fresh blog posts are on their merry way my friends~ but obviously they are all under wraps for the time being.
One of the best perks surrounding this job is connecting with new people. We are lucky enough to receive handfuls of emails from perfect strangers on a regular basis. Some simply offer beautiful compliments, some offer personal experience and some pose great questions. I thought since there are so many people today interested in photography, it wouldn't hurt to share my answers in an open forum style post. The comment box below, as always, is completely open for further opinions and suggestions. Feel free.
The following are 3 common questions we are asked along with my responses.
How many photos do you take during a full wedding day?
Unlimited. With Sean and I both shooting continuously throughout the day/night we usually come away with anywhere between 2000-4000 digital images depending on the length of our stay. Now, that being said, we also eliminate like crazy to produce the best of the best on the final disc. I like to shoot as much as possible, even if it means 50 images of the exact same scene or moment. Sometimes all it takes for a photo to go from good to YEHAW is a simple angle change or light reflection. We get a little trigger happy at important moments to account for eye blinks and unflattering facial expressions that are bound to happen.
How do you get kids to cooperate?
HA! 99% of the time... you don't. They're kids! I personally just try to let them see how much of a dork I am so they feel comfortable enough to be who they are. Which is usually cooler than me!
What advice do you have for beginner photographers?
Oh my gosh. I dislike this question. While I am humbled that anyone would want my opinion, I truly am a beginner myself. We all are. There is always something new on the learning curve to figure out. I've been doing this on a serious level for 3 years now and I never once attended a fancy school to learn what I know.
I practiced. I asked questions. Practiced some more. Researched and studied. Trial and error. Have I said practiced?
I can only suggest, to anyone who wants to take their photography to a new level, learn your craft, experiment until your equipment makes sense to you and try weird things.
Here's to hoping this post helped or inspired even one person somewhere out there.
I leave you with a special Noah photo.
For 2.5 long years, since the day my nephew Noah was brought home by his parents, he has tried tirelessly to make Roger their 11 year old cat be his friend. He's tried chasing him, riding him, pulling his ears, squeezing his tail and calling him out from behind the couch. Roger is not a fan of Noah. Just recently I think I've noticed a little bit of give in Roger's fight. I took this photo not too long ago, and what is so great about it is the evidence of what appears to be, dare I say, a mutual friendship! I do believe poor old Roger, has made a friend out of Noah.
